Vail: What's Going On

Thanks to Allan Goldberg

Plum Vail is very sorry to say goodbye to friend Allan Goldberg.

Goldberg, executive director of First Descents, a kayaking organization created to empower young cancer survivors, died Sunday, June 22, at the age of 40 after a recurring bout with cancer.

Not only was Goldberg a friend of Plum, but during his few years in Vail became a friend, mentor and athletic icon to locals and visitors of all ages.

As a child, Goldberg fought rhabdomyoscarcoma - a rare and pervasive body tissue cancer - and overcame it only to come down with another type of cancer two years ago.

Even as he fought the disease, Goldberg's No. 1 priority was to enrich the lives of other young adults with cancer and to impart his love for outdoor adventure.

He will be remembered fondly by all whose lives he touched.

Allan Goldberg of First Descents
